Art and ideology in the age of totalitarianism
Ein Vortrag von Olena Chervonik

Does art have a social role to perform? Can art be a tool of political subversion? The current presentation considers the relations of art to ideology in the context of the Soviet and post-Soviet art scene. With various groups of underground art characteristic of the Soviet condition and the on-going censorship prevalent in the current Russian society this Eastern European space provides telling examples of artistic practices which are capable of overstepping the boundaries of ideology. Installations of Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, photographs of Boris Mikhailov, and videos of the Blue Noses group demonstrate that even without an obvious political agenda in mind art practices have the power to subvert ideological edifices.
