July 2012 - Video Art in Brazil

Presented by Ana Magalhães (MAC São Paulo)

- Video Art in Brazil -

Presented by Ana Magalhães (MAC São Paulo)

on July 25th 2012, 7 p.m. at the auditorium at Kunstmuseum Bonn:

Art historian Ana Magalhães gives us a panorama of video art in Brazil, from its beginnings in the 1970s to the present. From the context of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, she will present the most important aspects of Brazilian artistic scene in those years. MAC had a significant role in the development of video art in Brazil, as a great estimulator of this new medium in its initial phase.

We will see some extracts of videos by Letícia Parente, Anna Bella Geiger and other video artists from Brazil. A particular aspect to be considered is the fact that the rise of video art in Brazil coincided with the instauration of the military dictatorship in 1964. In such a repressive context, art was much censored, especially video art and other recording media, considered to be dangerous and likely to be used for documentation purposes.

With german introduction and translation.

In cooperation with German-Brazilian Society.
