Retrospective Kenneth Anger

Forbearer of pop art, pioneer of camp culture: Kenneth Anger, 85 years old, is the last survivor of the early American avant-garde film. With its Kenneth Anger retrospective, Videonale opens a film series which explores the links and interfaces between film and video art. In Bonn Kenneth Anger will present his own works from the ”Magick Lantern Cycle” as well as a series of works seldom shown.

„Few artists today have achieved the legendary status, notorious celebrity and sublime mastery of the cinema as Kenneth Anger, one of the greatest virtuoso filmmakers to emerge from the postwar American experimental film movement“, writes the Harvard Film Archive. His avant-garde short film „Scorpio Rising“ (1964) from the ”Magick Lantern Cycle” is viewed as the first representative of postmodern cinema and greatly influenced a whole generation of directors.

Author and film critic Daniel Kothenschulte is the curator of the retrospective.
